Circulation of silkworm breeding techniques through Farmer House Building--An examination of Silkworm Hygienics in China, France and Japan

Silkworm breeding is generally carried out in individual farmer houses, and thus technical development would improve the living conditions of breeders. In the second half of eighteenth century under the influence of Chinese sericulture knowledge, according to some French scholars’ observation, France succeeded in developing advanced techniques concerning silkworm breeding, and thus farmer house building was refurnished. The silkworm epidemic illness also pushed scientists over several countries to discover new methods of breeding. Also based on Chinese knowledge, we can detect that Japanese scientists created well-ventilated and hygienic silkworm breeding room.

Dressing the Naked Body: Cultures and Trade in the Contact Zones

荷蘭東印度公司所構築的亞洲貿易圈東緣正與處於亞洲東南的南島社會文化圈重疊。近代初期以來在此區域更為加速地上演人群、宗教、社會、文化與商品的移動與在地建構的過程。本研究擬透過處於南島世界北端的臺灣觀察此一過程，聚焦荷蘭東印度公司的織品貿易與臺灣南島裸身社會的關連性。

The trade zone of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) had overlapped the Austronesian social-cultural sphere in the Southeast part of Asia. The movements and processes of localization of peoples, religions, social and culture traits and commodities have rapidly shaped the regions since the early modern era. This project is to observe such a trend through the case of Taiwan, the northern point of the Austronesian World, and to focus on the relationship between the VOC’s trade of textiles and Taiwanese naked societies.

歷代中國的戰爭課題多屬政治、經濟、社會或技術史的範疇，關於戰爭與文化表述的關係鮮少論及。然而，明清的戰爭圖像與文字表述比起過去，不論在量或質上都有顯著的變化，其所以盛行和發展的脈絡十分值得注意。本研究擬以專書的規模，分論：1. 戰爭與宦蹟：明代的戰爭相關圖像與官員視覺文化；2. 戰爭與滿洲：皇太極建構的努爾哈赤與《滿洲實錄》；3. 戰爭與和平：康熙朝的戰爭圖像與文本；4. 戰爭與帝國：乾隆麾下的武勳圖像。

The topic of war in China is usually discussed in the fields of political, economical, social or technical history and is seldom considered with from the cultural perspective. Compared to previous periods, however, both the quality and quantity of visual and textual representations of war in the Ming and Qing dynasties increased dramatically. This project plans to complete a monograph including the following chapters. 1. War and Official Accomplishment: Ming Images of Warfare and the Visual Culture of Officialdom. 2. War and Manchu: Nurgaci and The Veritable Records of Manchu constructed by Hung Taiji. 3. War and Peace: Images and Texts in the Kangxi Periods. 4. War and Empire: Images of Battles in the Qianlong Reign.
